How to create multilingual homepage

I have installed WPML.
I can translate pages etc, but this link doesn’t tell me how to have a multilingual homepage

Recently Added Documentation for WordPress Themes

The language choices appear on the top menu, but switching between languages always gives the same content on the homepage sections.

Pro tip: don’t delete the translated page of the homepage.

At some point I did something which caused a message telling me this was the problem and offered me the option to restore the page (which is brilliant). restored from trash and the homepage is now working in two languages.

Still some kinks to work out but progress!!
